Retailer Spotlight: Swagger Gifts

Here at Room It Up we are very lucky to have the opportunity to work with some amazing specialty retailers.  Recently we have discovered that some of our retailers are doing fabulous things and we wanted to take some time to celebrate them and their stores – enter the “Retailer Spotlight” series. For our first ever retailer spotlight we decided to highlight Swagger Gifts located in Cary, NC!  I recently stumbled across Swagger’s facebook page and discovered that they are really doing some great things with their store and their online presence.  Mandy and friends even blogged and posted to facebook about their buying trip to AmericasMart in Atlanta this January which I thought was pretty clever.  Below you can learn more about how Swagger is meeting todays economic challenges and opportunities, what makes them stand out and of course what they love about Room It Up!

RIU (Alex): Tell us a little bit about your store!

SWAGGER (Mandy): Swagger has the largest selection of personalized gifts in our area.  And since personalization/monogramming is so HUGE –  people come to us first when they are looking for something special!  We provide our customers with fun (useful) stuff and gifts with attitude!  Above all we specialize in customer service and have heard time and time again that that is why our customers continue to shop with us!

RIU: How are you meeting the challenges of today’s economic conditions?

SWAGGER: We have always prided ourselves on having differing price points.  We have a large selection of $5 – $15 dollar gifts as well as $50 and up.  I believe this served us well when the economy shifted and people tightened their purse strings.  Our customers knew that that they could find cute stuff at all price points at Swagger, so they continued to shop with us instead of going to a discount store or somewhere else like that. Fortunately, we have seen increased sales every year since we opened in 2002.  Another thing we have done is keep our store STOCKED! We get fresh merchandise weekly and always have something new to talk about with our customers!  Customers don’t want to shop in a store that has bare shelves or “old” items.

We started our Frequent Buyer program the day we opened and I think it was one of the best things we ever did.  When a customer spends $250 we give them $25 in Swagger Bucks to be used on ANYTHING they wish.  There is no fine print on our Swagger Bucks so people really love getting them.

We also have events such as our Annual Holiday Open House in November and several “Shop for a Cause” charity events throughout the year.  Women love a good Girls Night Out and we all love Retail Therapy – right?:)  Events get people in the store and if you have great stuff they will buy!

RIU: If your customers could describe your store in one word what do you think it would be?

SWAGGER: (side note – Mandy asked her customer’s via her Facebook Fan Page – and these were her favorites!)  Swaggalicious, Funtastic, Wishlistable, Fanfreakingtabulous, Heavensent

RIU: Are you currently using Social Media in your everyday business tactics?

SWAGGER: We love Social Media and have really enjoyed connecting with our customers in Cary and across the US!  When we started Swagger’s FB page in November 2008,  I really wanted people to interact with us and have a reason to come back regularly, so we came up with the idea of doing a weekly giveaway which we call our Facebook Friday Giveaway (I know – very originalJ). We give away new and popular items that we sell in the store and on our website.  The giveaways have been a great way to gain new “fans” – we currently have over 1100!  Facebook has also been a great way to tell our customers about new items, promotions, events, community happenings, etc.  It has also been a good resource for us, because we often ask our customers what they want to see in the store or ask their opinion on lines we are thinking about carrying.  Plus it is really rewarding to check on our page and have a nice customer leave us a sweet message – I LOVE that part!:)

RIU: Finally, what are your favorite products from Room It up to carry in your store?

SWAGGER: We love Room It Up!  You guys always have fresh new designs that are on trend and that our customers love!  We also love how everything coordinates – you don’t want your beach bag to clash with your cover up do you?!  Our favorite RIU items are the:

  1. Spa Wrap – cutest one on the market for sure – LOVE the ruffle!  Great for using as a bath wrap or bathing suit cover up on the beach!
  2. Lounge Chair covers – super cute and new to the RIU collection!  Our customers are going to love this item – most of them have little kids and spend a lot of their summer by the pool!
  3. And of course we can’t forget the Lap Desk!  This is a great item – especially during Graduation!  Perfect for studying in the new dorm room

Feature of the Week!
